New Volkswagen Passat & Passat Estate

Offering striking new looks, impressive fuel economy and the very latest technology, the all-new Volkswagen Passat provides the ideal combination of style, comfort and dynamism. The eighth generation Passat was launched in early 2015. The new Passat is built on the revolutionary MQB platform, meaning a raft of new technologies will be available on the car. In addition, the new Passat benefits from a range of efficient new engines with CO2 reductions of up to 14 per cent.

Dimensions and new design

At 4,767mm long, the saloon is two millimetres shorter than the previous model, while the wheelbase is 79mm longer at 2,791mm. The body therefore has significantly less overhang. The Passat is also 14mm lower at 1,456mm, and 12mm wider at 1,832mm.

The design takes the new Passat in a more upmarket direction. Its longer wheelbase and lower and wider proportions convey a more premium class car. It will compete competently against key segment models such as the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes C-Class, as well as the mainstream competitors like Ford Mondeo.

Despite exterior dimensions marginally smaller than those of the previous Passat, interior space is improved, with more leg and head room, as well as increased luggage space. The interior has been developed to match the sophisticated exterior through the use of high quality materials and a design that creates an air of spaciousness.

Range line-up and specification

The new Passat comes with high specification levels as standard. The core range line-up mirrors that of the Golf family, with the addition of the SE Business trim which has been specifically designed for fleet drivers.  A dynamically styled R-Line trim tops the range.

Standard specification includes a 6.5-inch colour touchscreen second-generation Composition Media system. SE models and above benefit from Adaptive Cruise Control with Front Assist and City Emergency Braking.

A host of new technologies will be available on the new Passat:

  • Car-Net ‘Guide and Inform’ – in-car connection to the internet via a smartphone WiFi hotspot. Key information such as online traffic data, news and weather can be accessed via the Passat’s colour touchscreen infotainment system
  • Predictive Pedestrian Protection – radar behind the rear view mirror scans the area in front on the Passat and detects pedestrians, exercising a full emergency stop if there is no braking intervention from the driver
  • Traffic Jam Assist – brakes, accelerates and steers automatically easing the strain during stop-and-go traffic
  • Emergency Assist – Helps keep the car in the lane and brakes automatically to a full stop if there is a medical emergency situation
  • Trailer Assist – helps to manoeuvre trailers with ease: the system automatically steers with precision. The driver is only required to accelerate and brake

As well as these new technologies, several technologies from other Volkswagen models will be available on the Passat for the first time, including Area View, Pre-Crash Basic and Multi-collision brake.

Engines and CO2 emissions

The new Passat is available in diesel only, reflecting the strong diesel focus of this segment. The entry diesel engine is a 1.6-litre unit producing 120PS and is available in 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG transmissions. A brand new Bi-Turbo engine coupled with a 7-speed DSG gearbox and 4MOTION is also available, producing 240PS and with a 0-62mph acceleration speed of 6.1 seconds. The 2.0-litre engine is available in two further power outputs, a 150PS and 190PS, both with 6-speed manual or DSG transmissions.

With off road styling and protection the Passat Alltrack is the most versatile specification in the Passat range.
