Ever since the Volkswagen Golf made its 1974 debut, no Top 10 hatchback list has been complete without its presence. So why has this bestselling family hatchback proved to be so enduring? Well, Volkswagen’s reputation for build quality is an important factor – and another is innovation. In 2018, the Golf’s evolutionary process resulted in its eighth-generation incarnation, the aptly titled Golf 8.
There are plenty of great trim levels to choose from: Life, Active, Style, R-Line, GTE, GTD and GTI. The entry-level Life grade comes well-equipped as standard, with 16-inch alloy wheels, self-levelling LED headlights and separate LED daytime running lights.
Whichever trim you choose, the Golf 8 is a practical car, with a five-door body that provides straightforward access for rear-seated travellers. It features a well-appointed five-seat cabin too, which affords a superbly comfortable ride. There’s also plenty of leading-edge tech to enjoy, included to keep travellers entertained en route while maintaining seamless connection with the outside world. Moreover, the Volkswagen Golf 8 offers a class-competitive 1,237-litre maximum cargo capacity.
Engine options begin with a 1.0-litre 108bhp petrol unit and end with a 2.0-litre 113bhp diesel engine, returning between 47.1mpg and 62.8mpg. CO2 emissions, meanwhile, range from 117g/km to 137g/km.
